We went to Shake Shack and had bun-less cheeseburgers and FRENCH FRIES!!! (Our fave, can you tell?)
Ordering was easy, just explain that you have a wheat/gluten allergy and that you need them to change their gloves and get lettuce/cheese from the back.
They also have an Allergen Sheet with gluten, peanuts, eggs, etc. and whether a product is processed in a facility with a certain allergen - pretty impressive! SIDE NOTE - the Shake Shack that we went to specifically said that there fries ARE gluten free. Other locations might be a little less careful regarding the ‘shrooms and fries being fried in the same oil/machine. MAKE SURE TO ASK!
The fries were amazing, and we also split a peanut butter milkshake… To. Die. For. Get here ASAP!!!

Georgetown Cupcake - Bethesda, MD

We went to Georgetown Cupcake when we were in Bethesda, MD and LOVED what we had. It was after a huge meal, so we could only handle one cupcake (unfortunately), but the one we had was worth the wait. We waited on a line that stretched out the door and snaked back and forth a few times, nervous that there would be some sort of cross-contamination with all of the chaos. But as we stepped up to the counter and ordered a Gluten Free Lava Fudge cupcake (the GF flavor of the day), the girl behind the counter quickly replied, “Is this an allergy?” We said yes and she made sure whoever served us changed their gloves and avoid contamination!

This cupcake was AMAZING! There was gooey chocolate fudge on the inside, but the chocolate flavor wasn’t overpowering. We ate it in a quick few bites, but regretted letting it disappear too quickly! We were also SURE that our cupcake was gluten free from the cute orange flower candy on top!

We can’t wait to go back and try ALL of the gluten free flavors.

Find the Georgetown Cupcake near you, and keep your eye out for more pictures of different Georgetown Cupcakes this summer when me and Sammy are united in NYC!

Hi everyone, sorry we’ve been MIA! Brooke has been so busy studying in St. Louis and Sammy has been busy with grad school! But we’re back and ready to bring you all the GFree Goodies in NYC, St. Louis, and BEYOND! Get ready!

Q
How to order gluten-free sushi! Do you need to ask for them to use a clean bored, gloves, etc to make sure it does not come in contact with sushi that contains tempora or artificial crab. Thanks!

A

So, to be quite honest we are not the BIGGEST sushi eaters around… Something about the raw fish freaks us out! But if you will be ordering sushi, explain that you have an ALLERGY (makes them more aware) to wheat. You will definitely need a fresh cutting board and explain that you can’t have tempura bits or artificial crab or spicy mayo, and sometimes even wasabi. Just be diligent about explaining that no wheat can come in contact with your sushi and you should be somewhat safe. Always use your discretion though!

Omission Beer Hits NYC

On October 24, in honor of Celiac Disease awareness month, Omission beer hosted an event at Swine (531 Hudson Street). Sammy ventured over there and was please with what she found!

Omission beer actually uses gluten in its recipe, but only leaves in less than 20 parts per million (the legal amount of gluten that can be in a product and still be considered gluten free). As a result, the beer tastes authentic and regular!

You might be scared that your beer might have more than 20 ppm of gluten in it… What to do? Go to your beer and find the code (as listed on their website under “Test Results”), you can see how much gluten is in your specific bottle! Omission tests every batch and bottle of GF beer that they make to ensure that it’s Celiac friendly!

Swine provided some DELICIOUS gluten free food to go along with the beer tasting!

Chicken lettuce wraps! There were many more yummy gluten free noshes but everyone ate them so quickly Sammy couldn’t get a shot of them! Swine offers gluten free options, including bread (YAY!), on their menu so definitely try it out!

Sammy leaving with 2 6-packs of Omission beer!

All of you who miss beer since you’ve gone GF, Omission is the option for you! And even if you’re not GF, Omission Beer is still delicious! Sammy’s friends like it too!

Bar Italia

Do you miss chicken milanese? Don’t fear, we’ve got you covered. Bar Italia on Madison Avenue is a chic, yet pricey, Italian restaurant with a gluten free menu. We had to go back twice in one week because we couldn’t get enough of this GF chicken. Our friend Jacob said it was the best gluten free meal he’s ever tasted, and he’s not even GF!

Insalata di Carciofini - cucumber, corn, & cherry tomato salad.

Gluten free pasta with black truffles and parmesan cheese - our mom kept stealing our pasta it was so good!

Yes, that’s what you think it is… Gluten free RED VELVET CAKE by the slice in a restaurant. It’s to die for, it’ll be gone before you know it!

Best pizza we’ve ever tried, hands down. Keste Pizza & Vino (located on Bleecker Street) knows their stuff about Celiac Disease and have perfected their gluten free dough. They have a separate oven in the basement with separate toppings and utensils to avoid cross contamination so you know you’re 100% safe! The dough stretchy, dusty, and tastes normal - it’s unbelievable. Try this place as soon as you can. We cannot explain how amazing this pizza is - GO GO GO !!! And it’s right next to Risotteria and Grom so you can have a slew of gluten free fun down on Bleecker!

Pala

If you’re looking for a place that can make almost anything on their menu gluten free, Pala Pizza on the Lower East Side is the place to go. They can make almost any of their dishes GF, including the fried stuff! Check it out!

Patatini - homemade potato chips

Arancini - risotto balls filled with spinach and mozzarella cheese

Gluten Free Pasta (we chose corn/quinoa spaghetti) Tonnarelli - porcini mushrooms, parmesan, parsley, and rosemary

Pretty sure this is the Bufala Cruda Pizza… We asked for the pizza most similar to margherita and this is what they brought us. The crust is to die for.

And to avoid contamination and confusion they label the GF pizza!

Everything at Pala is AMAZING and they have a separate gluten free menu. Try everything we got and more - we loved it all!!!

Keens Steakhouse

If you love steak and miss creamed spinach, Keens Steakhouse in NYC is the place for you. You might recognize the name from when it was mentioned in Mad Men, and any place Richard eats at is good enough for us - especially if it can accommodate gluten free!

Porterhouse for two - gluten free! No rub on the steak, just salt and pepper!

Gluten free hash browns! Unfortunately the fries aren’t gluten free (fried in the same oil as gluten), but these are absolutely delicious so who cares?!

And Keens has done the unthinkable - gluten free creamed spinach!!! Thick, creamy, and delicious WITHOUT flour!
